Fred Ihrt

Fred Ihrt was born in Pforzheim, Germany in 1918 and lived in Hamburg, Germany until his death in 2005. He worked as a press photographer for the German newspaper Rhein- Necker- Zeitung from 1948-1951. In 1957, he became a staff Photographer at Stern magazine for the next 30 years. In 1967 he won the 1st place World Press Photo price for his photo story that revealed a Greek concentration camp on the island of Gyaros run by the military junta. In 1979 he won the 3rd place World Press Photo price for his photo story about the Russian Orthodox Church.
